Owens Corning Furloughs Composites Workers
03/04/2009   10:08
Owens Corning has announced that it will furlough 50 of its 96 employees at the Brunswick, ME composites facility. Company officials say that the lay off is temporary, initially 30 days, but that it may change depending on market conditions. All but two of the employees are production workers.

The Brunswick facility manufactures mainly fiberglass and composites for wind turbine blades and the wind energy industry, but also had recently expanded into marine composites. The facility was formerly Brunswick Technologies and then Saint-Gobain, but became part of Owens through a purchase in 2007.

Our Take

Company officials say they believe the lay-offs to be temporary and they may be right given that the current US Government "stimulus" package contains billions of dollars for wind energy development. Even so, I don't think that will come as too much of a consolation to the 50 workers that are laid off.
